Woolpit Nurseries also offers a ‘Pick and Collect’ service for customers who like to get their tree early but don’t want to take it home right away. Choose your tree in advance, and we’ll care for it until you’re ready to collect it. This service makes it so much easier, especially if you’re not ready to set up your tree the day you buy it.

Why a Real Tree is Worth It

If you’re still weighing the pros and cons of real vs. artificial Christmas trees, we’re here to tell you why a real tree is the way to go. Not only does a real Christmas tree bring a piece of nature into your home, but it also comes with that unmistakable, fresh evergreen scent that truly says “Christmas.”

Eco-Friendly Choice

Real trees are far more environmentally friendly than artificial ones. They’re biodegradable and often grown on sustainable farms that replant trees year after year. Choosing a real Christmas tree near Bury St Edmunds from Woolpit Nurseries means you’re supporting local farming and sustainable practices. And after the holidays, you can bring your tree back to be recycled, where it’ll be turned into mulch—no plastic waste heading to landfills!

Choosing the Perfect Real Christmas Tree near Bury St Edmunds

So, you’ve decided to make the trip to Woolpit Nurseries for your Christmas tree—fantastic choice! Here are some tips to help you select the perfect tree for your home.

Real Christmas tree near Bury St Edmunds at Woolpit Nurseries

1. Measure Before You Go

It’s essential to know how much space you have in your home before selecting your tree. Measure the height of your ceiling (and remember to factor in the height of your tree stand and topper). This way, you can avoid bringing home a tree that’s either too tall or too short for your space.

2. Think About Shape

Trees come in different shapes—some are bushier and fuller, while others are more slender. Woolpit Nurseries displays their trees unwrapped, allowing you to fully assess the shape and decide which fits your room. If you have a smaller space or you’re placing your tree in a corner, a slimmer tree might be the way to go. For larger spaces, a full-bodied tree could be ideal.

3. Consider Needle Retention & Fragrance

If you’re someone who likes to keep the tree up for several weeks, a Nordmann Fir is a great choice. Known for its strong needle retention, this tree will keep looking good throughout the holiday season with minimal needle drop. If fragrance is more important to you, however, the Norway Spruce is your best bet—it has that classic Christmas tree smell.

Caring for Your Real Christmas Tree

To keep your tree looking fresh and vibrant throughout the festive season, here are some essential care tips:

1. Cut the Base

Once you get your tree home, it’s crucial to place the trunk in water. This helps the tree absorb water more easily, keeping it hydrated and reducing needle drop.

2. Keep it Watered

Real Christmas trees can drink up to a litre of water a day, so keep an eye on the water level in your tree stand. Refill the stand as necessary to ensure your tree stays hydrated and doesn’t dry out.

3. Avoid Heat Sources

Keep your tree away from direct heat sources like radiators, fireplaces, or heating vents. Too much heat will dry out the tree quickly, increasing the risk of fire hazards and causing the needles to drop sooner than you’d like.

What Else Does Woolpit Nurseries Offer?

Besides our stunning real Christmas trees, Woolpit Nurseries also provides beautiful selection of handmade Christmas Wreaths, small Christmas Trees in pots, poinsettias, and seasonal Xmas plants.

If you’re looking to spruce up your outdoor space during the colder months, we also stock winter garden plants like cyclamens, pansies, ferns, grasses, heathers, and lavenders. These hardy plants will add colour and texture to your garden, even when everything else is frosted over. And don’t forget our wide selection of garden pots, decorative gravel, and compost to get everything looking its best.

FAQ’s

You can buy your Christmas tree as early as late November. If you’re worried about it drying out, you can take advantage of Woolpit Nurseries’ Pick and Collect service to reserve your tree early and collect it closer to Christmas.

The Nordmann Fir is known for its excellent needle retention and will last the longest with proper care.

We don’t recycle Christmas trees. But SARS (Suffolk’s Emergency Medical Charity) offer Christmas Trees recycling each year. Just book in your old Christmas trees and they will pick up and recycle for a minimum donation of £5. SARS are based in Woolpit and cover the whole of Suffolk.

Caring for Trees During Autumn and Winter

Autumn is a crucial time to take care of the trees in your garden, ensuring they remain strong and healthy through the winter and are ready to thrive when spring comes.

Pruning fruit tree in winter - Woolpit Nurseries

Pruning:

Late autumn is a great time to prune your trees. Remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches to reduce the risk of winter storms causing damage. For fruit trees, this is also the perfect time to thin out branches to improve airflow, which will encourage healthier growth and a better crop next year.

Mulching & Watering:

Applying a layer of mulch around the base of your trees helps insulate the roots from freezing temperatures. This also helps to retain moisture in the soil, which is essential for newly planted or young trees that are still establishing their root systems.

Planting New Trees:

Autumn is the best time to plant new trees, as the soil is still warm enough to encourage root growth. Consider planting bare-root trees, which are often more affordable and establish quickly when planted in late autumn or early winter.

At Woolpit Nurseries, we stock a fantastic selection of trees, shrubs, and mulch compost to help you care for your garden all year round.

Frost Protection and Maintenance Tips

As winter approaches, it’s essential to protect your garden from frost. Many plants are susceptible to frost damage, but a few simple steps can keep them healthy:

Frost Fleece:

Drape frost fleece over delicate plants and shrubs during particularly cold nights.

Water Early:

Water your garden plants early in the day to prevent overnight freezing, which can damage roots.

Insulate Pots:

Move pots to sheltered areas or wrap them in bubble wrap to protect them from frost.

Gather your selected bedding plants, a suitable pot or container, compost, mulch (optional), broken pots or stones for drainage, a hand trowel, and a watering can.

2.     Find the Right Spot

Choose a well-lit and sunny location for your garden pot, ensuring it won’t become waterlogged during heavy rains. If using a large or heavy container, position it in its final spot to avoid heavy lifting once filled.

Maintaining a lush and healthy lawn is a top priority for many gardeners in May, but think about balancing your lawn care with wildlife conservation. Maybe consider leaving some areas of your lawn uncut to provide habitat and food for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. These “wildlife zones” can serve as valuable refuges for biodiversity and contribute to the overall health and resilience of your garden ecosystem. Additionally, mow areas of your lawn less frequently to allow wildflowers to bloom and provide nectar for bees and other pollinators. By adopting wildlife-friendly lawn care practices, you can create a more sustainable and ecologically diverse garden that benefits both you and the local wildlife.

Gardening tip 7 Spring Bulb Maintenance

As the last remnants of spring fade away, it’s time to turn your attention to the care and maintenance of daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs ready for next spring. In May, many daffodil clumps may become overcrowded, leading to reduced flowering and diminished visual impact. To rejuvenate these clumps and encourage healthy growth, consider lifting and dividing overcrowded bulbs. This process not only allows you to replant bulbs in new areas of the garden but also promotes better airflow and prevents disease. Take advantage of this opportunity to refresh your garden beds with a vibrant display of daffodils and other spring bulbs, adding a touch of color and elegance to your outdoor space.

A Beginners Guide to Hellebores https://woolpitnurseries.co.uk/gardening-news/guide-to-hellebores/ Fri, 16 Feb 2024 17:01:01 +0000 https://woolpitnurseries.co.uk/?p=8543

Beginner’s Guide to Hellebores: Everything You Need to Know

Hellebores, also known as the Christmas or Lenten rose, are the unsung heroes of the winter garden. With their elegant, nodding blooms and evergreen foliage, these perennials bring color and interest to the garden when little else is in bloom. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, this comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about growing and caring for hellebores.

What are Hellebores?

Hellebores, scientifically known as Helleborus, are perennial plants prized for their winter and early spring blooms, from January to April. These hardy plants are mainly native to woodland edges, making them ideal for shady spots in the garden. With flowers ranging from shades of green, white, pink, to ruby, these plants add a pop of colour to the winter garden. Some popular varieties include the Oriental hybrids (Helleborus x hybridus), stinking hellebore (Helleborus foetidus), and holly-leaved plants (Helleborus argutifolius).

How to Grow Hellebores

Hellebores are relatively easy to grow, making them perfect for both beginner gardeners and experts alike. Here’s a quick overview of how to grow hellebores successfully:

  1. Planting Time: The best time to plant hellebores is from autumn to spring, although they can be planted at any time of the year, avoiding the dry summer months.
  2. Where to Plant: Hellebores thrive in light or dappled shade with some sun exposure. They prefer soil enriched with organic matter and conditions that are neither very dry nor waterlogged.
  3. Planting Technique: When planting hellebores, dig plenty of organic matter / compost into the soil and position the plants at the same level they were growing in their original container. Space the plants according to their variety, and apply a mulch of organic matter to help retain moisture.
  4. Ongoing Care: Newly planted hellebores require regular watering during their first growing season. Established plants benefit from watering during hot, dry spells. Feed container-grown hellebores regularly with a balanced liquid fertilizer, and prune away any damaged or diseased foliage in autumn.

Common Challenges and Solutions

While hellebores are relatively low-maintenance plants, they can still face a few issues. Aphids and leaf spot are common problems but can be managed through hand removal and pruning, respectively. Ensuring the plants are not in very dry or wet soils also helps prevent issues.
